Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the many reasons why Rwanda the land of a thousand hills has become the top destination in the world. This is not only the place for relaxation but also one of the places for insight and adventure into Rwanda’s single beauty. This forest is the largest protected mountain forest in Africa that covers between 1600 to 2000 square kilometers and it’s a 5 hour’s drive into the Middle of Rwanda. This park has got a beautiful scenery with large centuries of old trees and the added thick forest, as well as the extra ordinary tropical forest home to a 200m canopy walk way that will offer you a great memory that can hardly be compared by anything else in the world. You can enjoy the canopy walk for about 2 hours from the starting point at Uwinka visitor center. This forest is found on a mountain and the hike is also slippery due to the fact that the ground is sometimes wet and so moist. Viewing the canopy on arrival, is so amazing most especially for those that fear the heights, since it can be described as a walk to hell.
The bridge deferred between the large trees on the feel of the fresh air, 60m above the forest floor. More so, apart from the freshness in the air and the aerial view of the tree, you get to enjoy the sights of the birds that fly across as you enjoy the walk. This walk is the most enjoyed activity for the park visitors and it’s one of those you want to try before leaving the park.
The canopy walk was opened in 2010 and it’s the only of its kind in east Africa and the third on the African continent. This 90m long canopy walk way offers a unique face to face meeting with the butterflies, birds and the money. The hard wood occupies the upper canopy as the lower part is filled with large purple orchids and the lush fauna and flora that twist better in the higher altitudes.
Apart from The Magnificent Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park, the forest offers many trails into the different parts of the forest for the hikers and the walkers. The guided walks start from the central uninka reception center, the western Gisakura entrance and the eastern Kitabi entrance. Even though the scenic view is good from the top, the attractions from the floor are also good enough. There is also the network of the ten mud trails taking you inside the forest.
Get to reward yourself with a visit to the 10km hike to the Ishuno waterfalls that are very fantastic. It might be small in size, but this calm waterfall strikes its waterfalls that are so great, it also strikes its way and the breeze to which one is also welcomed will feel one of life’s great pleasures.
Nyungwe Forest National Park of Rwanda harbors this canopy walk and access imposing insights into East Africa’s largest and oldest Afro Montane forest. The walk way is 200m and hangs across a steep and deep valley that is filled with the thick forest. The walk offers breath taking views across the misty forest and the great sightings at the eye level of the variety of wildlife that live in the canopy.
The walk takes 2 hours and it starts and ends at Nyungwe National Park headquarters, the Uwinka tourist center. The first 200m is just a walk along the forest trail under the thick canopies for a chance of seeing the ground level nature before taking on the canopy walk way to get to the top. The most common sightings include; monkeys and birds. The minim um age for the walk is 6 years and the kids must be accompanied by the adults. The canopy walks costs $60 per person paid at the reception center. The activity can be carried out throughout the year. The chances of rain falling while undertaking the walk is high, so it’s advisable to always carry a rain Jacket. Other vital things to carry include; hiking shoes, drinking water, camera, small back pack, camera batteries, walking sticks and rain jacket.
The Magnificent Canopy Walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park starts at 8:00 am or 10:00 pm as well as 3:00pm.
