Itinerary for 11-Days Wildlife, Mountain Gorillas & Chimpanzees Conservation Safari in Uganda

Day 1
To Murchison Falls National Park with a stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track White Rhinos:

On this day, you will have your breakfast & transfer to Murchison Falls National Park. The drive will take you through Luwero triangle & Budongo forest in the western arm of the Rift Valley where you will also be rewarded with splendid views of the countryside with a stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

You will arrive in the afternoon, have lunch then enter the territory of these southern White Rhinos on foot where well-trained rangers will guide you through the bush to where the White Rhinos are. You will get the opportunity to watch these endangered, magnificent creatures in their natural habitat before proceeding to Murchison Falls National Park.

You will arrive to Murchison Falls National Park in the evening & check in to Fort Murchison Lodge (www.naturelodgesuganda.com) for your dinner & overnight stay in non self-contained tent with clean shared bathroom facilities. The lodge is set in a beautiful surrounding and looks out on the majestic Albert Nile that always add to the safari experience of its guests.

Day 2
Game drive & Boat Safari on Victoria Nile:

Your safari breakfasts will be served before the day breaks so that you can start your morning game drive as the sun comes up. Sunrise is the best time for wildlife spotting as animals tend to be the most active during the “golden hours”, when the first rays of sunshine come to rest on the savannah. Lions, Elephants, Buffalos and several species of antelope are some of the characters you may come across today, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot a lion or leopard.

You will return for lunch in the afternoon & go for a 3-hours boat safari upstream on the Victoria Nile to the falls where you will pass by breathtaking scenery, as well as many crocodiles, hundreds of hippos, buffaloes, water birds, monkeys & other animals that come down to the Nile. The boat will drop you near the waterfall for your hike (1-1.5 hours) up to the top of the falls (optional at additional cost of $15 pp).

After your boat safari, you will return to Fort Murchison Lodge (www.naturelodgesuganda.com) for your dinner & overnight stay in non self-contained tent with shared bathroom facilities.

Day 3
Top of the Falls Walk and Transfer to Kibale National Park:

On this day, you will enjoy your last sunrise & breakfast in this beautiful National Park in Uganda with a walk to top of Murchison Falls for about 30 minutes to 1 hour & transfer to Kibale National Park with several stops along the way for lunch, beautiful scenery, landscape viewing among others before reaching the Park.

You will arrive to Kibale National Park in the evening & check in to Kibale Forest Camp (www.naturelodgesuganda.com) for your dinner & overnight stay in non self-contained safari tent with your own clean shared bathroom facilities.

You will get absorbed by forest smells and sounds, spot primates swinging through the trees and observe rare birds and beautiful butterflies fluttering around. The elegant tented camp is located in a patch of evergreen forest which borders the Magombe swamp and is a mere 10 min drive to where your chimp tracking will start.

Day 4
Chimpanzees Tracking & Visit to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary:

On this day, you will wake up early and have breakfast before moving to Kibale National Park for Chimpanzees Tracking experience where you will have the opportunity to follow an experienced guide into the forest to observe these fascinating creatures at a close range. Watching them interact with each other and go about their daily routine of grooming, playing and foraging is an incredible experience. While your chances of encountering chimpanzees are high during your tracking excursion, it is never 100% guaranteed. These are, after all, wild animals with wills and minds of their own!

In the afternoon after your lunch, you can choose whether you would like to go for Community walk or go deeper into the forest on a Swamp Walk in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary; home to 8 primate species, over 200 bird species, butterflies and various reptiles before returning to Kibale Forest Camp (www.naturelodgesuganda.com) for your dinner and overnight stay in non self-contained safari tent with clean shared bathroom facilities.

Day 5
Community Conservation Activities with the Communities of Kibale National Park:

On this day, you will have your breakfast then join the communities of Kibale National Park for tree planting activities (Afforestation, Re-afforestation and Forest Restoration Projects), preparation of tree nursery beds, traditional dance, community conservation awareness/education, eco-tourism activities, community walks, visiting some schools among others. You will spend the whole day with them and even have your lunch together.

After community conservation activities, you will return to Kibale Forest Camp (www.naturelodgesuganda.com) for your dinner and your overnight stay in non self-contained safari tent with clean shared bathroom facilities.

Day 6
Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park for Afternoon Game drive with a stopover at Rubona to meet and support Bulegeya women weaving group:

After your early morning breakfast, you will embark on an exciting drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park situated in the shadows of Mt. Rwenzori with several stops along the way for equator, beautiful landscape viewing and meeting with Bulegeya women weaving group in Rubona before reaching the Park in the afternoon.

You will arrive to Queen Elizabeth National Park in the afternoon and have your lunch before embarking on your afternoon game drive where you will expect to view animals like elephants, buffaloes, Lions, bush pigs, antelope’s families among others.

After your long journey and afternoon game drive, you will check in to the Bush Lodge (www.naturelodgesuganda.com) for your dinner and overnight stay in non self-contained safari tents with clean shared bathroom facilities.

Day 7
Game Drive & Boat Safari on Kazinga Channel:

On this day, your safari breakfasts will be served before the day breaks so that you can start your morning game drive as the sun comes up. Sunrise is the best time for wildlife spotting as animals tend to be the most active during the “golden hours”, when the first rays of sunshine come to rest on the savannah. Lions, Elephants, Buffalos and several species of antelope are some of the characters you may come across today, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot a lion or leopard.

You will return for lunch & later in the day when the sun is high in the sky & the animals make their way to the river for a drink, you will head to Kazinga Channel for an exciting boat safari. You will spot more hippos today than you can possibly imagine. Herds of elephants & buffalos will also be wandering down to the shoreline to bath in the cooling waters. It will be a wonderful experience.

Day 8
Tree Climbing Lions Game Drive at Ishasha sector & Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:

Your safari breakfasts will be served before the day breaks so that you can transfer to Ishasha sector for your morning game drive as the sun comes up. Sunrise is the best time for wildlife spotting as animals tend to be the most active during the “golden hours”, when the first rays of sunshine come to rest on the savannah. Tree Climbing Lions are a must see here, Elephants, Buffalos and several species of antelope are some of the other characters you may come across today, and if you’re lucky, you may even spot a lion or leopard.

After your game drive featuring Tree climbing lions, you will continue with the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park while enjoying a scenic drive that will allow you to view the beautiful and varied country side. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda on the rim of the Rift Valley. More notably, this “impenetrable forest” protects over 400 population of mountain gorillas – approximately half of the population in the world, among which are a number of habituated groups, that can be tracked by visitors.

You will arrive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the evening and check in to Buhoma Community Rest Camp (www.buhomacommunity.com) for your dinner and overnight stay in non self-contained tent with clean shared bathroom facilities. Buhoma Community Rest Camp gives outdoor enthusiasts a taste of safari-style living and is an excellent base camp for gorilla trekking, as well as observing the many endemic bird species that inhabit the region.

Day 9
Mountain Gorillas Tracking and Batwa Community Visit:

After your breakfast, you will hike to the Park headquarters just meters from the Lodge for briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority guides before transferring to the starting point for Mountain Gorillas tracking. Your tracking experience will be an exciting, yet challenging, journey along forested slopes, tangled vines, thick vegetation & bamboo forests before you reach the territory of these gentle giants. The visit will give you a glimpse into the life of Mountain Gorillas families & if you are lucky enough to gaze into the eyes of a Mountain Gorilla. Visiting Mountain Gorillas will take you 3 hours to a full day trek through the forest since Mountain Gorillas move from one place to another every day looking for food & water.

After your Mountain Gorillas tracking, you will complete your day with a visit to the Batwa Community for them to take you through their traditions of local beer making, traditional dance, and traditional ways of setting fire among others before transferring to Lake Bunyonyi and checking in to Bunyonyi Overland Resort (www.bunyonyioverland.com) for your dinner and overnight stay in non self-contained room with clean shared bathroom facilities.

Day 10
Canoe ride on Lake Bunyonyi and Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park for Afternoon Boat Safari:

In the morning after your breakfast, you will go for canoe ride on a scenic lake Bunyonyi. This lake is the only one were you can ride a canoe to visit all the 29 islands on this lake including the floating Island and the punishment Island where the young girls who got pregnant before marriage would be dumped and left to die.

After the canoe ride, you will transfer to Lake Mburo National Park. It is the smallest and is home to 350 bird species as well as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck.

You will arrive to Lake Mburo National Park in the afternoon, have your lunch and go for afternoon boat safari that will get you to come face to face with the flora and fauna of the lake. And along the bank, you will also see many animals that come to the water especially in the dry season. You will also see many hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, buffaloes, and over 3 types of otters that are found in the lake. Also when it comes to the birds, you will view the malachite kingfishers, African Fish eagles, blue headed weavers, Rufuos long tailed starlings, the pied kingfishers, hammerkobs, Herons, pelicans, the rare shoebill as well as the cormorants.

Day 11
Game Drive & Departure:

On this day, you will enjoy your last sunrise in this beautiful side of Uganda with your safari breakfast served before the day breaks so that you can start your morning game drive where you will be assured of spotting Zebras, Buffalos, Impalas, Warthogs, Waterbucks among others.

After your game drive, you will have your lunch before your guide drive you across the beautiful sceneries back to Entebbe and drop you off at Entebbe International Airport 3 hours before your departure time. Please make sure your flight departure is after 5 pm at the very earliest.
